playwriting
“Theatre is closer to poetry and music than it is to the novel.”
Here is my New Play Exchange profile.
I Think I Was Born Missing You
Developed in IAMA Theatre’s Emerging Playwrights Lab
A trans equestrian fights for his place in the elite world of English riding that has never embraced him or his Chinese Malaysian father. When Western circuit’s golden boy crosses his path, their rivalry ignites a reckoning with desire, family, and tradition. A queer, poetic reimagining of the Butterfly Lovers legend, I Think I Was Born Missing You asks how we carve out a life amid the legacies we inherit and the dreams we long for.

Upon his death, a Cantonese family’s patriarch leaves behind a mysterious journal to his grandchild, Benji Lau. Benji hasn’t been back home in years, not since he came out as trans and stepped out of his twin sister’s shadow. As Benji moves in with his newly widowed grandmother, he must figure out his new place in the family and excavate his grandfather’s unknown past. Flitting from the present to 1950s Hong Kong to Benji’s childhood, Moonbow weaves in magical realism and poetry for an intimate journey of navigating grief, building intergenerational possibilities, and finding home.
